The Last Samurai

A Japanese businessman, Omura, intends to use the army to suppress a a samurai-headed rebellion although the troops are not ready. Samurai leader Katsumoto is successful in his attack on them. Gant is killed. Algren is surrounded, displays cunning to save his life and Katsumoto takes him prisoner to live among them so that he can learn about his enemy. Algren acclimates to his personal demons, learns the Japanese language and about the Japanese culture, and grows close to the family. He comes to understand how modernization has eroded the samurai dominace in society.
