This is a UNIQUE, Hard-To-Find, ANTIQUE, EXCELLENT Condition, Hand Crafted, Marked "Chinese Kangxi Period Blue & White Porcelain Landscape Design Perfume Medicine Snuff Bottle" handmade in China in the mid-to-late-1600s.  My friend's Uncle purchased this WONDERFUL Snuff Bottle at an Estate Auction in Chantilly Virginia in 1976 from the estate of a Chinese American man and his wife who had spent their lives collection items that reflected their national heritage.  This Snuff Bottle was notated in my friend's Uncle's inventory as "Antique Chinese Kangxi Artemisia Blue & White Landscape Design Snuff/Medicine Bottle - 1668".  Displayed inside a glass cabinet as part of a Snuff Bottle collection, it was packed away in 2005 and forgotten about; recently rediscovered, it has been safely and securely stored.  As is typical of many Snuff Bottles, the Handle that had the spoon attached was broken so it acts as a stopper instead.  Otherwise, it is in EXCELLENT Condition with NO odors, chips, cracks, crazing or other damage; it comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home.  Hand painted, this Decorative Snuff Bottle has a height of approximately 3 1/4 inches and a diameter of approximately 1 3/8th inches; it is Marked with the Artemisia "Leaf" Mark which was used in the Kangxi period (1661 to 1722).

With a graceful shape and nicely detailed features, it was ENTIRELY hand decorated in underglaze-blue by a SUPERBLY talented Chinese artist who has created a DELIGHTFUL and HANDSOME Bottle.  The OUTSTANDING workmanship has WONDERFUL texture and flowing lines and this Snuff Bottle is truly a UNIQUE work of Chinese Folk Art that is quite ELEGANT!  BEAUTIFULLY painted, this Snuff Bottle features a painstakingly painted scene shows a lush landscape.  Featuring birds flying overhead, there are mountains in the background and trees and a cottage house in the foreground; all are depicted in fine detail.  The house cottage appears to be sitting by the side of a lake, ocean or sea on a rocky point overlooking the water and there is a small boat dock; far to the left, the Great Wall winds its way around the country.  Highly collectible, it is a well-weighted piece that is a FUN and EXOTIC addition to any room and is sure to be complimented on by everyone who sees it.  RARE, with EXQUISITE detailing, it is a MUSEUM QUALITY PIECE OF ART with nice details and a graceful form.  A STUNNING Snuff Bottle, this masterfully painted Snuff Bottle is JUST THE RIGHT WAY to add a touch of ancient Oriental Asian flair and mystique to your home or office décor.

Kangxi porcelain is very well made, with a thin body, a balanced shape and a smooth glaze without impurities.  Cobalt blue oxide was subtly applied in varying degrees of saturation, suggesting depth and volume and the color ranges from a silvery to a deep dark blue; in the best pieces (Like This Bottle) the details and the craftsmanship are amazing.  During the early Qing dynasty, up until the early 1680's conditions were unsettled in China and the existence of Imperial wares as well as the use of reign marks on porcelain was restricted in various ways.  During this period a number of different marks came into use (Like the Artemisia Leaf) which is a way of dating the period.  During Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1661-1722), taking snuff was all the rage at the Chinese court, as it was believed to possess medicinal qualities, including curing asthma and aiding digestion.  Snuff Bottles became fashionable accoutrements crafted to carry this medicinal powder.
