Myrica Rubra is an evergreen tree native to subtropical
China and Asia, with a smooth grey bark and a neat hemispherical crown. Aka the Yum Berry or the Red Bayberry, rarely found in shops as the fragile fruits don't travel well.
The fruit is spherical, deep red and grow to around 2.5 cm in diameter with a knobby surface. The flesh is sweet and very tart. Besides fresh consumption, the fruits are commonly dried, canned, soaked in baijiu (a Chinese liquor), or fermented into alcoholic beverages. 
Prefers a moist but well drained soil, in an open position in full sun or light shade. Normal garden soil is fine, but prefers loamy or peaty soil. Not hardy in the UK so best grown in pots and bought indoors in the winter. Can grow to a height of 10 meters
 
Planting instruction:
Sow the seed and cover, keep moist and warm to around 20C. Seed germinates better if given 3 month cold stratification and then sown in a cold frame. Pot on seedlings when large enough to handle, and grow on in cold frame for first winter.
 
Recommended pre-treatment: Cold stratification 
The dormancy of the seed needs to be broken to allow germination to occur.  This is generally done by 8 weeks of warm stratification where the seed are kept in summertime temperatures followed by 12 weeks of cold stratification in the refrigerator.
 
Method of cold stratification:
Soak seed 24 hours in water
Place seed on a moist paper towel and fold over or sow as normal in container.
Put paper towel or container in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator.
Remove to warm area and await germination.
 
The hard coating of the seed shell can be abraded with sand paper or cut with a sharp knife or hacksaw blade to assist moisture intake. Care must be taken not to damage the embryo.
