Picture postcards in the United States have evolved since the first examples appeared at the Chicago World's Fair, the Columbian Exposition, in 1893. The decade between 1905 and 1915 has been called the Golden Age of Postcards, with the U.S. Post Office announcing in 1913 that 900 million postcards had been mailed in this country that year. Today these colorful, hand-tinted images or aged sepia-tone real photo postcards are prized by collectors.
