Impressies 1945 - Geteisterd Nederland by Martien Coppiens

Published by De Pelgrim, 1947 Holland

A good copy of the first edition (1947) of a famous and scarce book covering the devastation in Europe in the aftermath of WW II. Inscription, minor foxing. Folio, paper covered boards. First edition of Coppens’ photobook documenting the devastated landscape of post-WWII Holland photographed in a haunting “combination of sun and cloud” (Parr & Badger), featuring 66 large photogravure plates.

Martien Coppens memorialized the effect of war on his native Holland, its landscape, buildings and people scarred by “the discontinuities and disruption of war. He chose the lighting carefully, often a combination of sun and cloud that would allow him to set a ruin picked out by sunlight… Add luscious gravure printing, and Coppens’ ruins look less like real buildings than stage sets. In all his work, and in this book in particular, Coppens opposed the prevailing trend in Dutch photography… and photographed this devastated landscape in the only way he knew… [demonstrating] that there were many different ways in which artists and photographers could come to terms with what had happened to Europe” (Parr & Badger I:195). Without scarce dust jacket. Captions in Dutch and English. Foreword by Coppens in Dutch.
Interior fine.
