The English foreword to this book says,
"This is a very rare exhibition catalogue of Mr.and Mrs.Someno's Ceramics Collection.Their collection consists of Bernard Leach,Hamada Shoji,Arakawa Toyozo and Miwa Jusetsu's excellent works.263 exceptional items are contained. All are shown in full color.Approx 208 pages.
Fortunately, this catalogue is written both in Japanese and in English. It is a good reference if you are interested in their works.
The family of Keiko and Yoshinobu Someno have generously donated 284 art objects which the couple collected passionately during their lifetime to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Hagi Uragami Museum The collection, which specialises in ceramics, not only allows us to trace the development of modern Japanese craftwork but also includes core examples of work and masterpieces by extremely important artists, and has therefore been familiar to researchers in ceramics, artists and art-lovers for some time. A distinctive feature of the Somenos' modern ceramics collection is the fact that it was assembled over a long period of time - from around 1960 until well into the 21" century - and that more than half of the pieces were collected in the late 60s and early 70s.
These dates not only coincided with a period of particularly high economic growth in Japan, but also signalled a time when, having survived dramatic post-war social changes, people were searching for spiritual enrichment and turning a more mature gaze to the arts. It was against this social backdrop that Professor and Mrs Someno became friendly with artists who exhibited at events like The Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition and the couple steadily collected works which struck a chord with them on a personal aesthetic level. This also makes sense in terms of the works which attracted the Somenos' attention at that time, namely ceramic artists like Bernard Leach, Hamada Shoji, Arakawa Toyozo and Miwa Jusetsu, who were Living National Treasures or of similar status, and whose work most clearly characterises the ceramics collection.
The current exhibition concentrates on presenting pieces from the two museums which received Keiko and Yoshinobu Someno's donation, introducing work by these superb ceramic artists as a public testament to the couple's great achievement.
We hope that the exhibition will afford visitors an opportunity to appreciate the creative intellect and marvellous passion with which the Somenos put together their art collection, as well as generating renewed interest in the fascinating world of Japanese ceramics and the creative activity of living ceramic artists. Finally, as well as once again expressing our heartfelt gratitude to the Somenos' relatives for this donation, we would like to sincerely thank everyone whose help and collaboration have contributed to making the exhibition possible.
