"Outsiders are the root of all evil," say the simple folk of Cutter Gap, a backwoods community in the Tennessee mountains in 1912. Christy, a young missionary from a privileged background, is assigned to this isolated cove rife with suspicion and poverty. Her job is to teach the children and to bring spiritual comfort to those in need, but she also tries to thrust progress onto people who do not trust anyone but their own kind. When the community blames her for a series of robberies because she "meddled" in the building of a road that opened the cove to the outside world, Christy's resolve and belief in herself are tested. But when the mountaineers' ugly suspicions of outsiders get out of hand, their faith in and loyalty to each other must stand their own trial.
