This is a pair of vintage traditional dolls made in Krakow, Poland. The dolls are beautifully detailed and the costumes and accessories are handmade. The Highlander woman is carrying water in two wood buckets attached to a sling across her shoulders. These accessories are made with natural woods. She has on a green flowered skirt with a red and white flowered top. She has a yellow scarf or babushka on her head. The man is a Polish Mountaineer in full costume. His jacket is worn sitting on his shoulders and the matching pants are a creamy off white with embroidered red and green flowers. He has on a white shirt with a leather belt or cummerbund with silver closures . He has a black hat with a feather on his head. The artist paid a great deal of attention to fine detail and workmanship on these dolls, they are quite stunning. He stands approximately 5 1/4 inches tall and she is 5 inches tall.
Each doll is mounted on a separate wood base. The original labels or decals are on the bottom of each and read “Lalki Regionalne Spoldzielnia Pracy R.L.i.A. Im St. Wyspianskiego w Krakowie Dziewczyna z nosidlami” Using the Google translator it comes back as “Lalki Region, Worker Cooperatives R.L.i.A. St. Wyspianskiego in Krakow – Girl With Sling.” There is also an original price tag from the Polish Boutique with $7.50 on each one.
These are in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There are two little residue marks on the top of the wood bases where little stickers may have been placed. I did not try to remove it, but it may come off with polishing.
These would make a great addition to your collection of ethnic dolls. They are truly unique and are a wonderful example of Polish Folk Art and traditions.
