Andy Warhol "Vote McGovern " __1972__

SUMMARY: This stunning lithograph is after the 1972 piece Warhol created in support of the Democratic candidate Senator George McGovern. It was his first print for a political campaign, whereupon he later produced others in support of the Democratic presidential candidates Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Edward Kennedy in 1980. Here Warhol pictured Richard Nixon, McGovern’s Republican opponent, with a livid green face, yellow lips and demonic orange eyes, beneath which a graffiti-like hand has scrawled ‘Vote McGovern’. Warhol lifted the source image from an official publicity photograph of President and Mrs Richard M. Nixon on the front cover of a 1969 edition Newsweek', transferring the green colour of Mrs Nixon’s conservative outfit to her husband’s face. A historical item of superb quality, it was commissioned by El Mundo of Spain in 2007. It bears the title and artist with year below the plate, and verso the support are corroborative details in Spanish, with reference catalogued in lead. Immediately 'ready for framing, the lithograph will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity detailing the origins of the item. [*sizes accurate within 0-5mms]
