Item description
This work from the EDO era is titled, Great Bridge on the Toyokawa River, from the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road by Two Brushes, made
in 1855. The artists are Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Kunisada. Hiroshige created the landscapes for the series while Kunisada
created the figures. This work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:
measures about 9 3/8" x 14"
Yoshida creates a lovely scene with kabuki actors. She smiles, waving her fan
at a nearby lamp. Her companion is looking puzzled, scratching his head.
Hiroshige depicts the Great Bridge over the Toyokawa River with travelers passing over the wooden structure and boats on either
side. a castle rises above the trees on the far shore.
