Additional Information One of the most influential and iconic musicians of the twentieth century, Miles Davis, changed the course of musical history with the release of "The Birth of the Cool" in 1957, which redefined the sound of jazz and led to the era of cool jazz. Davis was born in St. Louis and left to study the trumpet at Juilliard in New York City before dropping out to join the Charlie Parker quintet from 1944 to 1948. Pictured here in 1960, Davis was at the height of his decades-long career that evolved and continued to influence musicians across the world. Davis is key figure in the early development of jazz and would become a key figure in the fusion jazz sound that he also established in the 1970s with visionary albums like Bitches Brew. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and his collaborations with numerous musicians sparked careers that would go on to bring new success to younger generations. Some critics regard Davis as the most influential and inventive musician of his time, and he has been called the most important musician of the twentieth century. Davis received his first trumpet as a gift in 1935 at the age of nine from a friend of his father and would later state that "by the age of 12, music had become the most important thing in my life." This photograph is a piece of musical history that shows Davis in a period of exceptional creativity.
