Chris Martin, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky., made this 21/4"x21/4" cover transparency of his red-tailed hawk perched on a gloved hand. These hawks weigh about 21 lbs., and are about 22" in length. The adult red-tailed hawk is identified by broad wings and a short, rounded tail which is a chestnut color on top. Dr. Martin, who uses this bird in research, has permission from the authorities in Kentucky to exercise it, and he hunts occasionally with it in Florida. Hawks are birds of prey and members of the order Falconiformes, which includes all vultures, hawks, and falcons and are protected in most states. They feed mostly on field mice, reptiles, and insects. Though hawks occasionally attack poultry, they are considered more useful than harmful. Red-tailed hawks are sometimes used for falconry, or hawking, which is training the bird to hunt wildfowl and small game. However, the red-tailed hawk is comparatively slow, attaining speeds of approximately 50 m.p.h. The Peregrine, sometimes called the duck hawk, is capable of speeds in excess of 150 m.p.h. Falconry is reported to be currently legal in 5 states: Alaska, California, Florida, Illinois, and Maryland. MAJOR ARTICLES. The Power To Legislate . . . An Editorial. Federal Firearms Legislation.
