Item description
THAIS
by Anatole France
Translated from the French by Robert B. Douglas
Edited by Frederic Chapman
New York: John Lane Company, 1920.
First edition thus.
Originally published in French in 1890.
The Pulitzer Prize winning French novelist's foray into ancient historical fiction.
France based this novel on the events around Saint Thais of Egypt, a 4th-century influential convert to Christianity.
The novel inspired the opera by Jules Massenet, and was adapted into an American silent film in 1917
Former owner's name to the front endpaper, faint minor small stains to the rear cover, small cream stain to the upper spine edge, else very good in red linen with blind-stamped illustration and titles to the front cover and with gilt embossed titles and decorations to the spine; in a near fine lightly soiled dust jacket with tiny nicks to the spine ends and corner tips.
A lovely vintage edition with a remarkably well-preserved dust jacket.
