Item description
Digitally reproduced copy of a drawing rescued from an early 1900s history book. Maryland was the second colony, next to Massachusetts to have coinage of its own Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, (for whom the Colony?s chief city was named) realized in 1658 that the colony needed money, so he ordered a batch of coins to be struck in Britain for use in the Colony. Soon new coins (shillings, six-pence, 4-pence pennies) arrived from London. Lord Baltimore?s profile is on the obverse The Baltimore Family arms on the reverse,with the legend ?Increase be Multiplied? in Latin the value in Roman numerals.
