Close up of the pictures show the beautiful shape of the beads and separators which, with the main bead carving are of typical old and skilful ottoman carving. It was used in France and Germany from the 1920's to the 1940's. Once synthetic plastics were invented the production of Galalith ceased; Galalith, which is milk-based, as opposed to chemically based, is actually heavier than bakelite and has a much more polished finish.
