Antique Photograph, circa pre-1920. Identified as Cacildia L. Cain (also spelled Coin in 1940 US Census) and Emma L. Torrey, officials with the National Womans Relief Corps of Maine. Measures approximately 4 x 6 including mount. Condition: This is an original photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good condition. Comments: Ms. Torrey is identified as the past department president of the oerganization based in Rockport, Maine. Ms. Cain is stated to be the the organization chaplain. The 1940 US Census indicates Ms. Cain was Emma's mother-in law, and lists their ages as 79 and 58. They were living together in the same household. Emma's husband was Ernest M. Torrey, age 56. The first chapter of the Woman's Relief Corps began in Portland, Maine 10 years prior to the more notable one in Massachusetts. The WRC was a charitable organization in the United States, originally founded as the official women's auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1883. The organization was designed to assist the GAR and provide post-war relief to Union veterans.
