Gibbings remained a leader of innovations, new styles and techniques in wood engraved art from his first publication in 1919 through 1957. Though he became quite in demand as a classics illustrator, he wrote and evocatively illustrated numerous of his own books, including the much beloved travelogue nature books, of which this one includes an exploration of all aspects of traveling down the Seine river. Lower shelf-edge and corner tips slightly rubbed, else very good in rich maroon linen with gilt embossed rowboat illustration to the front cover and with gilt embossed titles and vignette illustrations of flying birds and water reeds to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.
