SYMPOSIUM FOCUSES ON REVIVAL OF ACADEMIC TRADITION by M. Stephen Doherty. The Editor of American Artist
reports on a two-day symposium held recently in New York, which brought together artists and scholars interested
in reviving the "academic" tradition.
LENNART ANDERSON: ART OF THE REAL: In this excerpt from Mark Strand's new book Art of the Real: Nine American
Figurative Painters (published by Clarkson N. Potter, Inc), New York artist Lennart Anderson describes his schooling,

SUN-FILLED LANDSCAPES BY MICHAEL HALLINAN by Diane Casella Hines. California artist Michael Hallinan uses
acrylic paints to record the brilliant, colorful landscapes of southern California and coastal Mexico. Here Hallinan
outlines how he works both in the studio and on location.
PAINTING ON LOCATION WITH WATERCOLOR by Alan Singer. This Brooklyn, New York, artist says, "A watercolor is
my intuitive response to reality." In this article, he discusses how he captures the spirit and sense of a place in his
watercolors.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: MARK A. MELLOR: This Connecticut watercolorist describes his love of the rural landscape
of New England.
CREATING ART WITH MARKERS by Howard Cossman. In California, Cossman uses colored markers to create richly
detailed pointillist scenes. Here he discusses how he meticulously places colored dots together to develop line,
tone, and composition.
MARION LERNER LEVINE by June Cutler. In this New York artist's still-life paintings, postcards, ribbons, boxes, seed
catalogs, and other objects are carefully arranged on large pieces of lace. Working in either oil or watercolor,
Levine captures the delicacy and mystery of these common objects.
DRAWING: A LIFELONG PURSUIT by Amos C. Gott. This Ohio artist says he never travels anywhere without his
sketching materials. Here he discusses his procedure for sketching on location and how he composes a drawing.
