COVER: HOLY WARS. Money Sex, and Power. Evangalists JIM and TAMMY BAKER.
Cover: Photo by Jerry Valente--SIPA.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
MOONLIGHTING: Two elite Marine guards at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow were accused of allowing Soviet agents to roam the embassy at night, gathering secrets and cracking American codes. According to U.S. investigators, Soviet girlfriends took part in the plot, and money changed hands. The two Marines, Sgt. Clayton Lonetree, 25, and Cpl. Arnold Bracy, 21, face possible death sentences if convicted of espionage. International: Page 32.
SCANDAL AND HOLY WARS: America's TV preachers were in an uproar with rivals trading charges of sexual misconduct, greed and lust for power. Evangelist Jim Bakker, whose tryst with a Long Island woman had already cost him his TV empire, said his accuser, Jimmy Swaggart, was plotting a hostile takeover. Evangelists around the country were choosing sides. National Affairs: Page 16.
OUTSIDERS FIGHT BACK: They were the outsiders when insiders were cheating on Wall Street. Now these victimized investors, big and small alike, are starting to sue for damages. As the government's securities investigation widens, their rush to court could become a stampede. Business: Page 40.
IN FAVOR OF WOMEN: Diane Joyce is the first woman to win an affirmative-action suit in the U.S. Supreme Court. In a landmark 6-3 ruling, the justices held that employers may adopt hiring and promotion practices that will benefit women and minorities--even at the expense of more qualified white men. Society: Page 58.
CHANELEGANCE: At last week's Paris collections, the House of Chanel stole the show with Karl Lagerfeld's witty designs. The Chanel image has never been more popular--but other couture houses, including Dior, are weathering hard times. Lifestyle: Page 50.
