BEHIND THE REPORTS: CU's primary function is to test products, and our judgments of quality never consider price as a factor. But in recommending purchases asa result of our tests, we usually take price comparisons into account. We need to know, therefore, what products are actually selling for. That's where our small army of shoppers comes in. Most of these 90 or so men and women live in metropolitan areas. They work only part-time for CU; many have full-time jobs, too. For the refrigerator report (page 624), we asked 14 shoppers to do a price survey. They went to local stores as ordinary customers and asked the prices of specific models. Their research shows that prices on a given refrigerator can vary startlingly even within a metropolitan area. (A few comparisons are graphed on page 626.) For the report on dried soup mixes (page 615), 15 shoppers filed reports on the dried soups available in their local stores. The shoppers found 244 soups-68 varieties, 41 brand names. Our Market Services Department in Mount Vernon narrowed that list to 44 of the most popular soups. Shoppers then went out and bought more than 10,000 samples of the chosen soups, marked them with the store name and the price, and sent them to CU.
