Item description
GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS:
A Study Of His Ignatian Spirit
by David A. Downes.
New York: Bookman Associates, (1959).
First edition.
Possibly inscribed by the author?: "To Mother and Dad, a praise, God Bless You," and SIGNED "Davey" to the front end-paper in blue-green ink.
Downes analyzes the complete, early to late poetry including fragment writings, and examines Hopkins' manuscript notes of planned future writings, to see the influences, ideals, spirituality, use of 'The Spiritual Exercises' and more to illuminate Hopkins' evolving Ignatian spirit.
Lower corner tips minutely bumped, else near fine, tight and firm in salmon linen with dark-brown embossed titles to the front cover and to the spine, red-and-yellow headband and tail-band; in a very good dust jacket with slight tanning to the spine panel, rubbing and nicks to the shelf-edges, very small chips and short tears to the upper and lower spine edges, and some rubbing to the flap folds and spine folds; original printed $4.50 price still intact to the front inner flap.
Octavo; 195 pages; notes; select bibliography; index.
