Hollywood melodrama starring Elizabeth Taylor. Ruth (Taylor) is the beautiful new bride of dour tea plantation owner John Wiley (Peter Finch). Frustrated in the stultifying atmosphere of Ceylon, Ruth falls for handsome American overseer Dick Carver (Dana Andrews), but before the couple can run away together, the region is devastated by a cholera outbreak. Trapped in a sexually fraught atmosphere in Wiley's mansion, the couple are soon under seige from a herd of rampaging elephants, determined to destroy the plantation that has been built in the middle of their ancient pathways.
