Imhotep Statue. Seated Statue. Imhotep. Made in Egypt 22cm
Imhotep was one of the wise men of Ancient Egypt who changed the history of the country. This statue depicts a priest sitting with a papyrus unrolled on his knees containing a prayer: "Let the water in the cup of any scribe [be offered in libation] to your Ka, Imhotep." This formula explains how the scribes had revered their patron saint from the New Empire, offering him a few drops of his glasses of water.
He lived during the reign of King Zoser of dynasty III. He had a large number of titles: "Chancellor of the King of Lower Egypt, a subordinate of the King of Upper Egypt, administrator of the great dominion, administrator of the Pat, great visionary (high priest of Heliopolis), master craftsman of sculptors and masons." He was also an architect and physician. His tomb has not yet been found, it is one of the great mysteries of Egyptology.
He was the one who designed the first pyramid erected in Egypt and the first to use the stone for its constructions, both in the king's pyramid and throughout its burial complex. During the New Kingdom he was revered as patron of the scribes and protector of scholars and sages.
The late Imhotep began receiving libations from the scribes during the reign of Amenofis III, in the 14th century a.C. Under Ramesses II, in the 8th century a. C., he was named "son of Ptah", the main god of Menfis, a city where he may have had a chapel. The deification process was finally completed with the mention of a temple and the existence of a clergy dedicated to Imhotep in the Saíta Period (XXVI Dynasty, 7th-VI centuries bc.C.). In the Thirty Dynasty (fourth century a.C), it was also believed that the new god had healing powers. This cult, which arose in the Menfis region, spread throughout Egypt and the Mediterranean basin, encouraged by imhotep's identification with the Greek god Asklepios.
