Item description
Signed and warmly inscribed by the author and dated on the FFEP. Tight, flat, square book with light soil and toning to the pages, marginally darker. Glue stain typical to the books of this era.
Mary Ballard Dupree was the author of about a dozen books (this one is absent from her WikiBib today). Her poetry regularly appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. The most well-known of these is Free Enterprise: A Book of War Poems published in 1943. Of the 100 trade copies of Family known, five are reported by WorldCat.
Beatrice Tobias is probably best known for illustrating Three Children and Shakespeare by Anne Terry White, a stalwart of the All About Books and other YA non-fiction of the mid century. Her works also adorned Best in Books, and the New Yorker.
Van Rees Press was embroiled in political scandal in the thirties, having printed a number of books for the Communist Party of America. Their acquittal was based on providing a service for pay. This may, or may not, be a vanity press release; or by private subscription as both women had established themselves.
