Rubin based on the recommendation of the Dollar Coin Design Advisory Committee. The dollar coin's obverse was designed by Glenna Goodacre. It depicts Sacagawea, a young Shoshone woman. Sacagawea carries her infant son, Jean Baptiste, on her back. She carried and cared for him on her intire 3,000-mile portion of the expedition with Lewis and Clark from 1804 to 1806. The reverse was done by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. It presents a soaring American bald eagle encircled by 17 stars, symbolizing the states of the union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804.
