Item description
This beautiful carved First Nations west coast mask is likely an early tourist piece from Vancouver Island. We got it from an antique shop on Pender Island that was closing. An expert from the Museum of Anthropology had this to say about it:
"I would say that this piece was made by a Kwakwaka?wakw carver, probably in the 1960s. I don?t know the name of the carver judging by the style, since the piece appears not to be signed. This appears to be a type of tourist-mask production that was developed around the 1960s by Kwakwaka?wakw carvers in Victoria and other places, in which they continued to carve in a style related to their stylistic tradition but making ?masks? that aren?t in any way functional pieces, but intended to hang on the wall.
Whoever made this carving put quite a bit of effort into getting some depth of carving and dramatic expression; it seems to represent a human/bear character, and the wood looks like red cedar."
It's a stunning art object with little hangers so you can put it on the wall. Measures approx 10.5" x 7".
