Item description
Featuring the iconic Golden Gate Bridge prominently, this advertisement by Transworld Airlines (TWA) bears a distinctive aesthetic and style created by prominent American commercial artist David Klein. Klein's style became highly popular during the so-called jet age of the 1950s and 1960s when advances in aviation technology made international travel possible. TWA ushered in a new era of luxury air travel and premiered the first inflight movie in 1961. Their brand became synonymous with the new developments in American culture during the 1950s and 1960s as advertisements became more polished and Americans had more expendable income during the post-war boom.
The Golden Gate Bridge is among the most recognizable pieces of modern engineering and remains a tourist attraction for San Francisco. Stretching across the San Francisco Strait for one mile, the Golden Gate Bridge was designed in 1917. Though, construction was not completed until 1937 and is considered one of the greatest marvels of modern engineering. Klein's work ushered in an aesthetic influenced by art deco but was indicative of the new styles that graphic design would evolve into in the coming decades. He remains an influential artist whose unique flourishes and distinctive touches are immediately recognizable.
The TWA series is even featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, with Klein's piece for the Fly New York campaign remaining in their permanent collection. This piece transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present and is a piece of advertising history.
