Additional Information
Pictured here in one of the most iconic photographs of the legendary folk singer, Woody Guthrie displays his guitar bearing the phrase "This Machine Kills Fascists." Guthrie remains one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century, inspiring artists such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Joan Baez, and many others. His ballads, often centered on the American experience during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, continue to resonate today. With a prolific catalog spanning folk, country, and children's songs, Guthrie's influence endures, and his album Dust Bowl Ballads is frequently recognized among the most impactful records in music history.
Raised in a middle-class family in Okemah, Oklahoma, Guthrie married at 19. The Dust Bowl forced him to leave his wife and three children as he joined the migration of so-called "Okies" traveling to California in search of work on the large farms that flourished with newly developed irrigation systems. During this period, Guthrie befriended activist Will Geer and acclaimed author John Steinbeck, both of whom promoted working-class rights. These influences helped shape Guthrie's political beliefs, leading to his association with leftist movements, including ties to communist groups throughout his career.
This photograph stands as an enduring snapshot of one of the most influential singer-songwriters in American history, capturing his spirit, activism, and musical legacy.
