Additional Information Founded in 1828, Oswego, New York, became an integral tributary of the Erie Canal that allowed the importation of essential goods from major ports like New York City and Boston. Home to Fort Ontario, where the United States Military maintained a significant presence throughout the nineteenth century, the city on the banks of Lake Ontario was experiencing a period of considerable growth and transformation in 1855. As the expansion of railroads increased access, Oswego became a hub for lines going to New York City, Delaware, and Ontario. Fort Ontario had long been the scene for conflict between American and British forces and was held by the British until 1796, thirteen years after the conclusion of the American Revolution. This detailed birds-eye perspective immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. By 1850 the city had become a popular destination for water therapy and drew numerous tourists to its spas and bathhouses. Birdseye perspectives were a popular illustration style from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s, when advances in flight allowed for aerial photography.
