Item description
Produced and published by German-born lithographer Edward Sascha, this stunning depiction of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, shows it in a period of significant growth and industrial expansion. The city became a central figure in the growing steel industry in the middle of the nineteenth century. Immigrants flocked from Western Europe to find jobs in the flourishing industry. Harrisburg was home to a central railroad hub, which further expanded its geographical boundary and allowed immigrants to establish communities and neighborhoods along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. By 1855 Harrisburgโs importance as both an economic and cultural hub was undeniable, with coal flowing through the city and steel exports among the highest in the nation.
The city became an important training ground for Union forces during the American Civil War. It provided a vital link between the Atlantic coast and the midwest allowing the transport of food, troops, and munitions to aid in the Unionโs efforts against the Confederacy. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought some forty miles from Harrisburg, and Picketโs charge could be heard from the town center.
Birdโs eye perspectives were produced to entice industrialists and workers alike, featuring prominent civil features, notable buildings, and points of interest. These panoramic views were wildly popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s. Merchants and residents also displayed these illustrations in a show of civic pride. The unique aesthetic and recognizable style immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
