ABOUT THIS BOOK
????????????????????????????????????????
This is the foundational official history of the Mennonite Brethren Church, written by Johann F. Harms (1855?1945) ? a prominent Mennonite Brethren minister, writer, and editor who served as assistant editor of the Zionsbote. Commissioned by the Jubilee Committee to mark the 64th anniversary of the founding of the Mennonite Brethren Church, this work covers the entire history of the Mennoniten Brüdergemeinde from its origins in Russia in 1860 through 1924.
Harms's Geschichte is widely cited as the first comprehensive historical treatment of the Mennonite Brethren Church ? scholars of Anabaptist and Mennonite history have referenced it for over 100 years as a primary source. It predates the more extensive 1955 history by A.H. Unruh and is considered a foundational document of MB church historiography.
The book includes a photographic portrait plate of the author, J.F. Harms, with his facsimile signature.
A unique and remarkable feature of this copy: the front endpaper contains a full handwritten transcription in ink of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "A Psalm of Life," written in an elegant cursive hand and signed "Longfellow." This is almost certainly the inscription of a previous owner ? a beautiful, intimate artifact of the book's personal history.
