COVER: A New life for Ike: Down on the Farm. (Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower.).
STORY OF THE WEEK: What your doctor learned: biggest A.M.A. convention ever is full of medical news about remedies and treatments he may (sob!) be using on you.
NEWSFRONTS: In words and pictures: labor's love lost among dispirited unionists; poi-licking, politicking governors; a look at the new military in Washington; and other people from the Duchess of AIba to Joe DiMaggio, plus actors in a who's who whodunit. [Double page photo of the cast of "Who Killed Jane Greer?", posed for this issue: Ronald Reagan, Nick Adams, Mickey Rooney, Edgar Bergen, Lloyd Bridges, Ralph Ballamy, Kay Thompson, Dean Jones, Dick Powell, and Jack Carson.]
EDITORIALS: Competition and the boom; An awakening for Orville.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAY: Visit to a famous farmer: personal impressions reveal Eisenhower as busy and contented. Photographed for LIFE by Edward Clark. [NICE, In-depth article, with multiple photos!]
THE COLOR SPECTACLE: Daring sky-high camera feat documents eerie, exhilarating sport of baton-passing by parachutists. Photographed for LIFE by Charles Bonnay. [MANY color photos!]
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK: Secret moments in a famous campaign: a top reporter reveals new insights on John F. Kennedy's strategy and decisions. By Theodore H. White. Illustrated by Arthur Shilstone.
BETTER LIVING: News from the waterfronts: easy-to-tote games and swimming gear; giddy camouflage, way-out wigs for wet heads; dramatic $10,000 beach house.
MOVIES: SUSANNAH YORK, Britain's dewy dazzler, rapidly heading for fame. [NICE three page article with multiple photos!]
PICTURE OF THE WEEK:
All incredulity, from bowler to umbrella tip, the Londoner arched his frame to peer closer, wondering how he could jackknife himself into the pip-squeak newcomer on London's streets. The minicabs, mostly little Renault taxis from France, are runnning a rough race against the top hat roomy -- and more expensive -- traditional hacks. The old line cabbies have fought back by crowding the minis to the curb. No use. Hundreds of minis are on the streets now and hundreds more are coming.
DEPARTMENTS:
SPECIAL REPORT: a great urge to help Flavio: LIFE's readers are moved by the plight of Rio slum family.
LIFE GUIDE: it directs you to summer pageants, art, books, records, theater.
MISCELLANY: beating a nip in time.
