THE COVER: Jean Louis Andre Theodore Gericault was born in Rouen, France, in 1791. One day he saw a dapple-gray horse rearing. Using his friend, Lieutenant Dieudonne, as a model, he painted Officer of the Imperial Guard. He completed it in only twelve days, and its exhibition established him as a champion of the Romantic movement in painting. Later Gericault himself served as a cavalry- man. He was only thirty-two when he fell from a horse and was mortally injured. . . . Interesting? But of course. But we suspect that Gericault, being French, would agree that Le Louvre is no match for oo-la-la to sailors on leave in Paris. In the background is Madame Recamier by Jacques Louis David (1748 --- 1825). The lookers-on are by our own Constantin Alajalov (1900 --- present).
