One day he saw a dapple-gray horse rearing. Using his friend, Lieutenant Dieudonne, as a model, he painted Officer of the Imperial Guard. He completed it in only twelve days, and its exhibition established him as a champion of the Romantic movement in painting. Later Gericault himself served as a cavalry- man. He was only thirty-two when he fell from a horse and was mortally injured. . . . Interesting? But of course. But we suspect that Gericault, being French, would agree that Le Louvre is no match for oo-la-la to sailors on leave in Paris.
