COVER: MOSCOW TRIALS -- Testing (President Jimmy) Carter.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
THE MOSCOW TRIALS: The Soviet Union sentenced Iwo dissidents to long terms at hard labor last week and put a chill on U.S.-Soviet relations as frosty as any since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. But Jimmy Carter's hunt for a "measured response" to the trials was undercut by U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young. Newsweek's cover report includes a detailed look at the trial of Anatoly Shcharansky, a George F. Will critique of the Administration's "lack of spine" in dealing with the Russians and a Newsweek/Gallup poll revealing misgivings about Carter's stewardship of U.S.-Soviet affairs but support for the ongoing SALT talks. Harvard law Prof. Alan Dershowitz contributes his defense for Shcharansky. (Cover photo by Darrell Holland.).
PRESERVING ALASKA: Spanning four time zones and 375 million acres of awesome beauty, Alaska is America's last frontier. The Carter Administration wants to preserve more than one-fourth of the state as parks and wilderness, but faces stiff opposiion from most Alaskans and from oil and nining companies. Newsweek's Gerald C. Lubenow toured Alaska to assess the controversy.
FORD FIRES AGAIN: Henry Ford II proved again whose name is on the building: he fired the company's president, LEE IACOCCA-the third heir apparent to get the sack.
CANCER AND DIET: Researchers are becoming convinced that some foods may indeed cause cancer. The precise link between diet and cancer is not clear-cut, but evidence suggests that a high-fat diet may play a role in cancer of the bowel, colon and breast.
GREAT SCOTS: SCOTTISH festivals and HIGHLAND GAMES in the south. [By Diane K. Shah, and Helen Arthur. With color photos!].
