Item description
This is a 1930s -1950s ceramic dimestore figurine of a boy using a walking stick and carrying his bass violin. There is a red JAPAN mark on the bottom.
Figurines like this were produced by the millions during the 1930s through 1950s and available at dime stores for a nickel or so. It was typical for the faces to be painted with some care to imitate European figurines, but overall the painting and finishing were not carefully done.
SIZE: This figurine is about 4 1/2" tall.
BACKGROUND: I recently bought a large number of older household, decorative, and personal items from the family of a couple who have moved to assisted living. They had many interesting things of their own, some inherited things, and many gifts (as he was a pastor).
Vintage Musician Figurine Bass Violin Japan, Hand Painted
Description
This is a hand painted 1930s -1950s ceramic dimestore figurine of a boy using a walking stick while carrying his bass violin. There is a red JAPAN mark on the bottom.
Figurines like this were produced by the millions during the 1930s through 1950s and available for a nickel or so. It was typical for the faces to be painted with some care to imitate European figurines, but overall the painting and finishing were not carefully done, as they weren't produced to be great art.
Most homes had at least a few of these in the kitchen or living room. As tastes changed, many people threw them away or gave them to children to play with, and today, cute ones are becoming fairly hard to find in good condition.
SIZE: This figurine is about 4 1/2" tall.
