Brand new factory sealed 2-disc dvd limited edition is one of the last ones made. Numbered 091524/100000 and has a lenticular 3-D cover that doesn't photo well (back of the ship is in the background is a little blurry) looks cool to the naked eye though. Blue Underground went all out with this release, a THX-Certified Hi-Def transfer from the original negatives. There is trailers, TV spots, posters, stills, and a DVD-ROM feature for your home computer. A decent time travel yarn initially lost in the early '80s glut of sci-fi and disaster films, the FINAL COUNTDOWN features a great story hook straight out of the 'Twilight Zone' manual and a stagggering cast for an independent feature. The film begins with its audience identification figure, systems analyst Warren Lasky (Martin Sheen), who has arrived aboard the atomic-powered aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz for an efficiency inspection. Captain Yelland (Kirk Douglas) steers the vessel through the ocean near Hawaii only to encounter a freak storm, complete with a swirling blue vortex that carries the ship and its crew back in time to 1941. Soon they're picking up Japanese communication signals and rescuing Senator Chapman (Charles Durning) and his aide, Laurel (Katharine Ross), from a boating attack -- both opportunities to alter history, since the Japanese are about to attack nearby Pearl Harbor and Chapman was lost at sea during the attack. Now the men face a dilemma: should they use their modern weaponry to change the course of history or allow world events to proceed as intended? Using the real Nimitz and a variety of actual U.S. and Japanese era planes for the dogfight sequences FINAL COUNTDOWN has become a notable cult favorite over the years. And the supporting cast alone is a once in a lifetime opportunity with the whole result being an enjoyable popcorn fare.
