Item description
On DVD or VHS: The picture above is of the prolific sire, STORM CAT, at Overbrook Farm in Kentucky.
In May of 2005, at the height of the Thoroughbred breeding season, Bernard Goldberg traveled to the idyllic grounds of Overbrook Farm - a horse-racing haven nestled among the Bluegrass hills of Lexington, Kentucky. There he encounters prized stallion, STORM CAT, who is truly the master of his domain. STORM CAT who was put out to stud after a middling racing career in the early 1980's has since sired several impressive and dominant Thoroughbreds in the world of horse racing and has produced many international champions.
A descendant (grandson) of the legendary and celebrated Triple Crown winner SECRETARIAT, STORM CAT is the most sought-after Thoroughbred sire in horse racing. And it's easy to see why - his offspring have earned more than $90 million at the track, prompting eager breeders to line up their mares outside his stable. Demanding a stud fee of $500,000 per session with no live foal guarantee, STORM CAT figures to earn more than $20 million this year alone. Unfortunately for his owners, the breeding days of this equestrian "cash cow" are numbered and the search for a new "mega" stud must begin.
Thoroughbred breeding, which has become a high-stakes game, is an intricate and detailed process that must be seen to be believed. Correspondent Bernard Goldberg takes a closer (but not too close) look at the billion-dollar business of horse breeding; a compelling and in-depth view into the science and lucrative sexcapades of that world are presented.
AS AN ADDED BONUS...a lengthy segment on 31-year-old TERLINGUA - STORM CAT's mama is also included at the end of the main feature...TERLINGUA - the royally bred daughter of SECRETARIAT and CRIMSON SATAN who took on the boys and won in the late 1970's who was trainer, D. Wayne Lukas' first Thoroughbred barn star.
In addition to this...news of the pensioning of STORM CAT due to declining fertility makes its way throughout the horse racing/breeding industry...it’s the end of a breeding dynasty but one that STORM CAT has stamped his mark on with progeny who will most likely carry on his blood for generations to come!
AND IF THIS ISN'T ENOUGH…the latest news is STORM CAT will be servicing Quarter Horse mares by artificial insemination at $20,000 a cover.
Another segment added is that of trainer Jonathon Shepherd and his connection to STORM CAT.
Also one of the last STORM CAT two-year-olds is offered at the Keeneland March Sale in 2010 out of a SMART STRIKE mare who doesn't meet his reserve due to the down market and economy - a thing that never would have happened just a few years ago!
Next, the LAST two STORM CAT yearlings are offered at the 2010 Keeneland September Sale - complete footage of both yearlings going through the auction are shown as the bidding begins...truly the end of a lasting dynasty!
And finally, sad news of STORM CAT's passing at age 30 is announced due to the infirmities of old age - the last two weeks of his life his health had gone down significantly - but he lived life to the fullest leaving a lasting legacy with his progeny.
53 Minutes.
