Item description
LEE
By Clifford Dowdey
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, (1965).
First edition, first printing
Contains publisher's "first edition" statement to the copyright page.
Enhanced with thirteen maps and with twelve photographs on
striking black-and-white plates.
Dowdey, the historian who authored six previous books on the confederacy, presents a detailed and fascinating history and comprehensive biography of Lee.
Lee's life story reveals the decisions he made that effected politics, the events of the time, goals, and military strategies used in the Civil War.
Based on extensive research and personal letters, Dowdey offers fresh insight into a complex man.
Lee was considered to have made an effort for harmonious restoration of the Republic.
Very light age-tone offsetting to the front end-papers, else fine in tan linen with gilt embossed titles, rules and decorations to a burgundy panel to the spine; in a near fine dust jacket with a short tear to the lower edge of the rear panel, crease-crimps to the upper and lower spine edges, and a vertical razor-like scratch to the lower rear panel; original $12.50 price still intact to the front inner flap.
A presentable collectible.
Octavo; 761 pages; unpublished sources; published sources; index.
