What's on this DVD: Dry-docks and Shipyards
This is a collection of films and
newsreels on Dry-docks and Salvage Operations on our US Navy Fleet. From
floating dry-docks, fixed dry-docks, to shipyards of WW2. Lots of great footage
of dry-docks in action, plus the greatest salvage operation the world has ever
seen: Pearl Harbor. This is DVD is so very fascinating to see these folks get
the job done. We hope you enjoy!
1st Film: "Salvage of the Floating
Dry-dock AFDM-2". This film is from the US Navy. During a hurricane in the
1960's a very useful floating dry-dock, AFM-2 broke loose from its mooring and
capsized. This film shows how they flipped her back and put her back into
service. Great story if you like these kinds of stories. Runtime 31:05 Min
2nd Film: "Pearl Harbor
Salvage". This is a unique newsreel filmed at Pearl Harbor during and
after the sneak attack on Dec. 7th, and the salvage operation that took place
to save many ships that the Japanese never thought would sail again. Runtime
8:12 Min
3rd Film: "Salvage of USS
California BB-44". Amazing film footage of the USS California BB-44
brought back to life. The film shows BB-44 first pumping out lots of water and
then being taken to dry-dock for a complete overhaul. In the process she looses
her old "Birdcage" towers. Runtime 6:22 Min
4th Film: "1966 Dry-dock of the
Battleship New Jersey". This is a shorter version of the USS New Jersey
being brought out of mothball. In 1966, it was decided that the mighty ship
would be needed in the Vietnam war, so she was re-activated, put into dry-dock
and refitted. Great re-birthing of the mighty ship! Runtime 12:05 Min
5th Film: "Jeremiah O'Brien in
Dry-dock". This is over 20 minutes of great footage of the SS Jeremiah
O'Brien being brought over to a floating dry-dock to meet USCG safety
standards. We had the privilege to film the process. My Son was on board and I
was on the ground. We took over 3 hrs of footage of the Jeremiah and reduced
the film to 20 minutes. Great stuff. Runtime 14:01 Min
6th Film: "Dry-dock
Newsreel". This is a collection of newsreels on dry-docks and shipyards
mostly during WW2. 1st – 1931, Old Ironsides in dry-dock, 2nd - 6 LST’s in a
Dry-dock, 3rd - Brizalian Battleship in drydock, 4th - Launching USS Astoria,
5th - Man overboard, 6th - Destroyers launched, 7th - Jeep Carrier Launched,
8th - Liberty ships launched, 9th - Women Riveters, 10th - Navy's new ships, 11th
- SS Normandie in Dry-dock, 12th - Last Liberty ship launched, 13th - Navy Sea
Crane, 14th - Floating Dry-dock in Pacific-CL-55. Runtime 19:07 Min
7th Film: "Seabees Build Harbor at Normandie ". This is a Navy
film on how the Seabees built the D-Day harbor also known as the Mulberry
Harbor. Runtime 12:30 Min
