Item description
Vintage Hand Painted Hakata Urasa Mimasu Clay Doll Man Fisherman w/ Fishing Net
Used in vintage condition, no cracks or chips. There are two holes one one side and the other on top of the head, I am not sure what they are used for , it seems to be from manufactory. There is something rattling inside, not sure if it's something that was used to cover the holes.
A beautiful example of Japanese Hakata Mimasu Urasaki figure of a seated "Fisherman" That?s mending his fishing net. Craftsmen from many regions of Japan are noted for their hand-made dolls, but Hakata dolls -- known locally as "ningyo" -- are perhaps the most famous.
With production based in and around Fukuoka, a coastal city on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, these pint-sized pieces of art have a long and evolutionary history. These vintage figures portrayed folk lore portrayals of traditional Japanese people.
Most dolls on the market are contemporary, although a small number of more valuable vintage examples date back to the post-World War II period, when a number were taken back to the United States by servicemen as souvenirs. This is an example of one of the ?vintage? era pieces.
NOTE: In my research, every ?Fisherman? I ran across had the ?right? leg crossed over the ?left?. This particular figure has the ?left? leg crossed over the ?right? leg. His face detail (hair, eyes, etc.) is also quite exquisite. He holds a ?repair needle? in the right hand while clutching net in his left hand and also by his left foot.
This figure measures approximately 6" wide (widest part), 8? tall.
Beautifully cast in ceramic and exquisitely hand-painted with rich color, shading and detail. Patina shows it?s age, but its condition is great without any cracks or chips.
Thank you for looking and possibly considering this wonderful piece.
