Item description
For a tidy little spoon made up of 5 grams of sterling silver, this spoon sure says a whole lot about an event that many people have long forgotten about. Inscribed on the top of the bowl it reads, "U.S. Battleship Maine". Underneath that description is a detailed etching of the ship itself. Underneath the ship is the inscription, "Sunk in Havana 266 Killed". It has a detailed flowered filigree relief on the top of the handle that is just beautiful. On the back of the stem it is inscribed, "sterling".
It was very difficult to get really good pictures of this, however, we tried different lighting and did the best we could to depict this beautiful spoon. As for age, it is our understanding that spoons like these would show up on the market on the ten year anniversaries of a major event like this which happened in 1889.
