FRONT COVER: Mountain Lion, by Kenneth Bunn, 1982, bronze,4 x4 x9 (with base). Photo by George Ward.
FEATURES:
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: MATTHEW DAUB. This Illinois artist uses photographs the way many artists use preliminary
sketches; however, he rearranges elements in his compositions and intensifies or alters colors to create "realism with
intensity and life.".
WILLIAM BECKMAN by John Arthur. Beckman is one of the most accomplished and best known painters in the country
today. His pastels of panoramic farm landscapes have been included in important museum exhibitions and publications.
John Arthur, who has curated several of these shows and has written two important books on the subject, describes
Beckman's images and techniques in this article.
A CONVERSATION WITH HAROLD WOLPOFF, by Charles Movalli. "I'm a people painter. I don't do the 'standard' portrait," declares this Massachusetts artist. Here Wolpoff discusses how he captures his sitter's character in his oils.
DONALD JURNEY by Eric P. Widing. This New York artist's oil landscapes recall the subject matter of the Hudson River
School, yet his lighter palette and freely painted style are definitively modern. Here Jurney's plein air approach is
discussed.
ARNE NYBAK: PAINTING STILL LIFES IN WATERCOLOR by Faith Summer. This instructional article discusses how Nybak, a
respected West Coast painter, creates his unusual flower still lifes. Calling himself "a gardener of the brush," Nybak gives
a step-by-step demonstration showing how he combines pattern and unusual color combinations into a balanced
composition.
THE AMERICAN ARTIST COLLECTION, 1982 SELECTION by M. Stephen Doherty. Kenneth Bunn's bronze sculpture of a
mountain lion has been selected as the seventh outstanding work in the American Artist Collection. The author describes
how Bunn developed his sculpture from sketches and models to the finished bronze cast. A limited edition of these casts,
each produced under the artist's supervision at a Colorado foundry, will be offered to our readers.
