THIS WEEK: our cover picture was designed from Tony Johannot's title page for an 1838 edition of the Abbe Prevost's novel, Manon
Lescaut. We are glad to publish a profile of the Metropolitan's first interpreter of Puccini's heroine, Lina Cavalieri, by Mrs. Matz, who delved
into contemporary accounts for her description of the dazzling soprano. Among the many operatic films appearing in American theatres this
spring, we are happy to discuss four which cover four entirely different relations of the operatic and cinematographic arts. The little-known
Manon of Daniel Auber and Eugene Scribe is studied by George A. Whetstone, of the Department of Civil Engineering of Texas Technological
College. Alfred R. Neumann, assistant professor at the University of Houston, has recently been elected to the Hoard of Directors of the
Houston Opera Association, whose work he now describes.
Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by
THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
