Item description
Captured by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press, this iconic image from the Battle of Iwo Jima became the first photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize in the same year as its publication and remains one of the most enduring images from the latter years of World War II as American troops overtook Japanese forces in the five-week battle which was one of the bloodiest clashes in the Pacific Theater. The image would become the inspiration for the Marine Corps War Memorial, which was constructed in 1954 as a memorial to all Marines who had died in service since 1775.
The American flag was raised in the afternoon after American forces took the mountaintop, though three of the six Marines in the photograph were ultimately lost in the battle. This photograph is a timeless tribute to the American Marines' dedication and service to their country during World War II and other conflicts, as their expertise and bravery are continually utilized in military actions. The Battle of Iwo Jima began on February 19, 1945. It was part of the United States military plan to defeat the Japanese forces by taking control of numerous islands in the Pacific Theater.
This legendary photograph stands as a tribute to the service of United States Marines. Its distinctive aesthetic and classic style immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is one of the most honored pieces of American military photographic history.
