Additional Information
Scheduled at the Apollo Theater, one of the most prominent venues in Harlem, this live performance by the iconic James Brown was a significant point in Brown's career. It was during the mid-1960s, after his departure from the rhythm and blues group the Flying Flames, that Brown, who had led the group through the 1950s, formed a new band. This new band, with its unique sound and style, would go on to influence and shape a new genre of music, known as funk, which would become highly popular for the following decades.
Brown began his career in entertainment in the early 1950s, following a brief period in a juvenile detention center, and would go on to achieve great acclaim during his illustrious career that continues to influence musicians and entertainers to this day. This concert was scheduled only one year after his first mainstream hit, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," was released and would mark Brown's transition into a national star as well as a turning point in his sounds, which would become entirely transformed by 1967 into a complete funk sound that would change the landscape of popular music in the United States.
Brown, who was born in rural South Carolina, came from humble roots and became one of the most influential, transformative, and popular musicians of the twentieth century. This concert poster captures a defining moment in Brown's career as he continued to evolve.
