Item description
German Pink Heirloom Tomato Seeds ? Sweet, Meaty, Large Fruit ? Indeterminate
German Pink is a cherished heirloom tomato variety with roots tracing back to Bavaria. Brought to the U.S. in 1883 by Michael Ott, it helped inspire the founding of the Seed Savers Exchange. This potato-leaf type produces large, meaty fruits with minimal seeds, making it ideal for slicing and preserving.
German Pink tomatoes take approximately 85?90 days to harvest from transplant. The fruit boasts a rich pink hue with a glossy sheen and typically measures 3 to 5 inches in diameter. Individual tomatoes can weigh between 12 to 32 ounces, with some reaching up to 2 pounds.
Flavor-wise, German Pink offers a sweet, juicy profile with a hint of tartness, prized for its balance and depth. It?s excellent for fresh eating, salads, sauces, and canning due to its dense flesh and low seed count.
This variety is indeterminate, meaning it produces fruit continuously throughout the season. Plants can reach 6 to 8 feet in height and benefit from staking or caging for support.
A true garden classic, German Pink combines beauty, flavor, and history in one unforgettable tomato.
**How to Start from Seed:**
1. **Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost.** Sow seeds OE inch deep in seed starting mix.
2. **Maintain a temperature of 70-75F** for optimal germination. Use a heat mat if needed.
3. **Keep the soil consistently moist** but not waterlogged.
4. **Provide ample light.** Use grow lights or a sunny window.
5. **Harden off seedlings** by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.
**Growing Tips:**
* **Choose a sunny location** with well-drained soil.
* **Provide support** for the indeterminate vines using stakes, cages, or trellises.
* **Water regularly,** especially during dry spells.
* **Fertilize with a balanced tomato fertilizer** according to package directions.
* **Pinch off suckers** (the small shoots that grow between the main stem and branches) to improve airflow and encourage fruit production. This is important with indeterminate varieties like Opalka.
* **Harvest tomatoes when they are fully ripe** and deep red.
