Item description
CHARLES DICKENS - PICKWICK PAPERS
Hardback book, as far as I can tell dating from the 1850's, as many details as I can listed below, read on...
This edition utilizes, what I believe is the earlier binding style, with black cloth, light markings commensurate with age, covering front and rear boards inset with intricate embossed design work, a diamond formation being the centerpiece, with raised bands. It does not feature a portrait of Charles Dickens set in a circle.
Cloth worn through at various, small, points, mainly the corners, and along the bottom edges.
Fade mark across cover, possibly from storage of another book across, diagonally, visible in pictures.
The binding has wear to the front end of the book, although the main body of the book is fully intact, the pictures uploaded show that some pages fall open easier than others, while a great many are tightly bound and still retain the original form of the original close, tight binding.
Some pages have pencil marks scrawled across, plus further pencil markings on all endpapers.
372 pages.
A generous selection of black and white illustrations relating to the story and characters, again, see pictures.
There is no frontispiece illustration of Charles Dickens, however there is a pair of lively portraits of the convened Pickwickians...
Spine with "JB Peterson Bros" at the base.
Yellow end papers.
Chapters run concurrently through the book.
Chapters numbered, I to LVIII under the heading Contents.
Illustration pages are not numbered.
Title page reads: “ “T.B. Peterson, No. 306 Chestnut Street.” and “T.B. Peterson’s Uniform Edition of Charles Dickens’ Works.” Twelve further Dickens titles are listed.
Use the 'Scroll Over' feature for meticulous scrutiny of the condition of the item.
Pictures uploaded, various views, all of the actual item.
Rare item, undeniably, ready for a new owner to care for it, and definitely one for the collectors and enthusiasts...
Any questions, happy to help...
