Item description
Antique one-sided embossed photogravure print by French artist Paul Louis Narcisse Grolleron (1848-1901) titled "A Capture, 1793." Published on heavyweight paper in 1893 by D. Appleton Co., New York. Stated copyright 1893 by the artist. "Photogravure Goupil" denoted beneath the image. Full size measures approximately 16.5 x 12.5. Recommended framing area including image, artist/title, and embossed inner white border (that portion of the border that would normally be visible after framing or matting) measures approximately 13.5 x 10. Condition: Print is in excellent condition aside from some age browning of white border along edges almost entirely outside the recommended framing area. There are no pin holes or tape marks anywhere on this antique print. Comments: Dramatic scene rendered in fine detail depicting a situation in War in the Vendee (1793-1796) where peasants have tied up and are abusing a soldier (this was a Royalist counter-revolution in western France that occurred during the French Revolution).
