Item description
Antique Real Photo Postcard, circa early 1920s. (Reverse side is handwritten "about 1920-23.") Identified as The Wingate-Simmons Company of Union, Maine. Depicting a historic and crystal sharp image of the business in Union, Maine. Note that our closeup view shows how well constructed and posed this image was. Parked in front of the garage an early automobile is loaded with men. At the far right a man is seated looking towards the camera in his vehicle. And a man, barely noticeable at the far left, is also determined to be part of the scene as he looks through his shop window. Other windows show merchandise including a Kodak camera sign. Photo by Eastern Illustrating Postcard Co of Belfast, Maine. Divided back, unused. Condition: This is an original photo postcard, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good to excellent condition aside from corner wear. Comments: The Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage in Union, Maine tells some of the story of the Wingate Simmons Company. Their web site reads in part, "With farm wagons, sleds, and a variety of horse-drawn vehicles, the Carriage House features a one-horse shay -- one of only two in existence, the second being displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Both carriages, stenciled by a native Union man, were built in 1850 by Collins, Wingate, Little Co. The firm later became known as Wingate Simmons Carriage Shop of Union, Maine."
