FEATURES:
PAINTING FIGURE COMPOSITIONS by David Zuccarini. This Maryland artist finds the human figure a source of unlimited subject matter. Here he gives a step-by-step demonstration of how he executes one of his figure paintings in oil, working from sketches and photographs of people he knows.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: SAMUEL D. BISSETTE. After more than 30 years in the banking business, this North Carolina artist took up painting watercolors, and his works can now be found in many public and private collections. In this article, he discusses his approach and his commission to paint scenes of North Carolina.
JEANNE DUVAL, by M. Stephen Doherty. After only one solo show at a cooperative gallery, this young New York artist has had a painting accepted into the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A student of Bruno Civitico and Gabriel Laderman, Duval gives a contemporary context to classic themes in her oil paintings.
SYLVIA PLIMACK MANGOLD by Margaret Mathews. The stark interiors and landscapes by this successful New York artist have been included in major gallery and museum exhibitions. The artist describes how these oil and acrylic paintings are created and how she balances the demands of her career with those of being a wife and mother.
PETER HOLBROOK by Barbara Whipple. Working in a darkened studio with a slide projector, this California artist creates large acrylic and watercolor landscapes with unusual vantage points and aerial perspectives. Holbrook discusses how his scenes of "canyon country' differ from the work of the Photo-Realists.
BILL JAMES: TECHNIQUES OF PASTEL PAINTING by Jo Ann James. This Florida illustrator develops his pastel portraits by applying short, broken strokes which optically blend together. Demonstrating his procedure, the artist explains how his approach lends "life" to his por traits.
